A former girlfriend of a transgender woman who was convicted of murdering a man she thought was dating has accused her ex-husband of mistreating her.
Shane Riggs was convicted last year of killing Michael Riggs in January 2015.
He is now fighting extradition to the US after being accused of raping Shireen Malik, who was 17 at the time.
She said she had met Riggs on a dating app, but he “wasn’t my boyfriend” and she did not want to have sex with him.
She told the ABC she feared her ex would go to jail for a lengthy time.
“I know he’s got a lot of good people that love him.
They love him for who he is.
But for him to go to prison for this period of time is just so heartbreaking,” she said.”
He said, ‘I’ll do anything for you’,” she said, adding Riggs told her he would “love you forever”.”
I will not be a victim,” she added.”
When I was going through that, I did feel like he was abusing me and hurting me.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt that before.”
Shireen’s mother, Barbara, said the case had “broken my heart” and her family were devastated.
“It has broken my heart because it’s been a year and a half now,” she told the BBC.
“She’s gone through hell.
We’ve been through a lot together.”
The most devastating thing is that my family are being hurt and they are not going to get the support they need.””
I don’t know what he’s going to do, I don.
I feel like they need to find closure.
It’s devastating.
“Shane has now left Australia, and is now living in the US.
