The top 10 apparel companies in the US accounted for almost a quarter of the sales during the first nine months of 2018, according to research from the consulting firm IHS Global Insight.
“In the second half of the year, the top 10 retailers saw a 14 percent decline in sales compared to the same period last year,” said IHS senior vice president of research, Craig Johnson.
“The top 10 manufacturers accounted for more than half of all apparel sales in the second quarter of 2018.
This marked a 14-percent drop from the first quarter of 2019, and the largest quarterly decline in apparel sales since the fourth quarter of 2017.”
While sales of clothes have been declining over the past few years, Johnson said the biggest sellers in the market have been the brands that have been expanding in the last few years.
“While apparel sales have been slowing, the biggest apparel sellers in 2018 were still in the top 20, with sales up 15 percent in total, up 12 percent in the apparel category, and up more than 10 percent in all categories,” he said.
“There were a number of brands that we believe have had a positive impact on the overall apparel industry.
There was a major jump in the growth in the men’s apparel category.”
A major theme in the clothing industry is shifting to the “Made in the USA” label.
IHS found that women’s apparel sales grew 13 percent, while men’s clothing sales grew 15 percent.
“These trends have continued throughout 2018, and we believe that the women’s clothing category is one of the most important and enduring consumer segments,” Johnson said.
“The men’s category, on the other hand, has been the biggest seller of clothing in the United States during the past year.”

The biggest sellers of women’s fashion, meanwhile, are brands like Under Armour , L’Oreal, Fendi, Gap and Levi’s.
“Men’s clothing continues to have a large impact on overall fashion sales,” Johnson added.
A number of major brands have made a push into women’s and girls’ clothing, including Nike, Adidas, Burberry and Gap.
“We believe that this is one key time for these brands to take advantage of the opportunity that women are experiencing to buy more clothes, particularly during the holidays and during the summer,” Johnson concluded.
In 2018, the apparel industry lost over $7 billion.
The industry is expected to lose $7.2 billion in 2019.
